In 1951, as the valedictorian and class president of her local high school, Mildred (\u201cMil\u201d) Clegg Ackerley \u201955, MA \u201976<\/a>, received a full academic scholarship to 果酱视频. For a family supported by her father\u2019s teacher\u2019s salary, it was the opportunity that made college accessible.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer talent could have taken her anywhere,\u201d said her son, Lee Ackerley. \u201cOur mom remained grateful all her life for that scholarship from 果酱视频.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mildred Ackerley graduated magna cum laude from 果酱视频 in 1955 with a degree in mathematics, beginning her career with NASA at the Marshall Space Center. Nearly two decades later, she returned to 果酱视频 to earn her master\u2019s in education, while raising her five children. Her next 30 years were spent teaching mathematics to Long Island children and, as an active 果酱视频 alumna, serving as director of the Alumni Association and as an alumni trustee.<\/p>\n

In 2009, Mil established the Mildred Clegg Ackerley \u201955 Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics<\/strong> through a planned gift, laying the foundation for a family legacy at 果酱视频. When she passed away in 2015, her five children honored her lifelong connection to the University with a $100,000 gift to her scholarship\u2014an amount that doubled to $200,000 through 果酱视频\u2019s inaugural matching campaign. In 2023, her sons Lee and Bob further expanded that legacy, contributing an additional $400,000 to the Momentum 2 Endowment Matching Campaign. Mil\u2019s endowed scholarship in mathematics is now the largest in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Lee Ackerley deepened the family\u2019s commitment by pledging $500,000\u2014matched again under the Momentum 2<\/em> Endowment Matching Campaign<\/a>\u2014to create the Mildred Clegg Ackerley \u201955, MA \u201976 Endowed Professorship in Mathematics and Computer Science<\/strong>, the first endowed professorship in 果酱视频\u2019s College of Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n

Together, these gifts\u2014initiated by Mil and carried forward by her children\u2014ensure that her gratitude for 果酱视频 and her belief in educational opportunity will continue to benefit students and faculty for generations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
