¹û½´ÊÓƵ’s James Baldwin Lecture tackles Trayvon Martin case and more

The ¹û½´ÊÓƵ presents the James Baldwin Lecture on Literary and Social Criticism. This year’s topic will be The Fire This Time: Constructing Our Post-Racial Future with speaker, Jamal Greene, J.D. Recent court decisions in the case, on racial profiling, and on voting rights challenge us to think critically about the status of race as an instrument of social organization, and the role the law plays in constructing that status.

The program will be held, Monday, April 21, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom of the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue in Garden City. The event is free and open to the public, no registration is necessary.

JamalÌýGreeneÌýis a Professor of Law at , where he teaches constitutional law, comparative constitutional law, the First Amendment, federal courts, and constitutional theory. ProfessorÌýGreene’s research focuses on the structure of legal and constitutional argument. He is the author of more than 25 law review articles and book chapters, with works appearing in the Harvard Law Review, the Yale Law Journal, and the Columbia Law Review, among numerous other publications. He is a frequent media commentator on the Supreme Court and constitutional law, having appeared on Charlie Rose, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and in numerous print publications. Prior to joining the Columbia faculty, ProfessorÌýGreeneÌýserved as an Alexander Fellow at New York University School of Law. ProfessorÌýGreeneÌýhas served as a law clerk to the Hon. Guido Calabresi of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Hon. John Paul Stevens of the U.S. Supreme Court. ProfessorÌýGreeneÌýis a graduate of Yale Law School and Harvard College.
