Highlights and accomplishments of the faculty of the Department of Languages, Literature, and Culture.
This year, Dr. Nicolas Carbo taught听courses in Advanced Conversation听Through Film, Trends and Tendencies in听Hispanic America, Intro to Hispanic Lit.,听Advanced Grammar and Composition,听and a Survey of Hispanic-American Lit.
Dr. Jonathan Hiller published the article听鈥淭he Negation of God Erected into a听System of Disaster Relief: The British听Press and the Great Neapolitan Earthquake听of 1857鈥 in Forum Italicum and a听book chapter on scientist Cesare Lombroso鈥檚听influence on literature and opera听in Routledge鈥檚 The Cesare Lombroso Handbook.听He also presented research on novelist听Alfredo Oriani at the AATI Annual听Conference in Strasbourg, France, and听will present a paper on Franchetti鈥檚 1892听opera Cristoforo Colombo at the 2014 MLA听Annual Convention in Chicago.
Dr. Nicole Rudolph presented a paper听on technology and nature in the French听home at the Society for French Historical听Studies in Cambridge, MA in April and听took over as Director of the International听Studies program in September. She has听signed a contract to publish her book, At听Home in Postwar France, with Berghahn听Books (Oxford / New York). She will be听speaking about the Grenelle de l’environnement听in Aberdeen, Scotland next July.
Dr. Priya Wadhera has signed a book听contract with Rodopi to publish 翱谤颈驳颈苍补濒听Copies: The Postmodern Aesthetic of Georges听Perec and Andy Warhol as part of Rodopi鈥檚听Faux Titre series. It is scheduled to appear听in 2014. Her article on food in Perec听鈥溾楶riv茅s de repas du soir鈥: Meals and听memories in Georges Perec鈥檚 W ou le souvenir听诲鈥檈苍蹿补苍肠别鈥 is presently under review by听French Forum, a journal of the University听of Pennsylvania.
Last fall, she published the article 芦F锚ter听la copie, brouiller l鈥檕riginal: Une 茅tude de听l鈥檈sth茅tique postmoderne dans Un cabinet听诲鈥檃尘补迟别耻谤 de Perec et d鈥檕euvres choisies de听Warhol禄 in Modern Language Notes and a听book review on 鈥淟鈥櫭﹖ernel et l鈥櫭﹑h茅m猫re鈥澨齜y Christelle Reggiani which appeared in听Columbia University鈥檚 Romanic Review.
Dr. Raysa Amador, in addition to her myriad duties as chair and tireless champion of the study of languages on campus, completed the manuscript of an intermediate Spanish language textbook entitled Lengua y vida (co-authored with Maria Dominicis) which will be sent to editorial houses for review. She also participated in the 2013 ADFL Summer Seminar in Pittsburgh, PA, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.
Dr. Rakhel Villamil-Acera completed a book chapter entitled 鈥淧edro Mu帽oz Seca (1881-1936): The Comic Effect of the Grotesque鈥 which will appear in Palgrave Macmillan鈥檚 Spanish and Portuguese Across Time, Space, and Borders. She has published 鈥淪ociolectos y antilenguajes en el teatro c贸mico de preguerra鈥 in the journal Critica Hisp谩nica. Her article 鈥溌u茅 divertido es divorciarse!: la desentimentalizaci贸n del divorcio en el teatro madrile帽o antes y despu茅s de la Segunda Rep煤blica鈥 is in press in the journal Hispania.. The manuscript for her book project entitled 鈥La construcci贸n del di谩logo teatral en el teatro c贸mico espa帽ol (1898-1936): el discurso humor铆stico en el context social鈥 has been submitted for review.
Together, the faculty of the DLLC have been working on the following programs throughout the year: The Certificate in Translation Studies, which has been approved and has begun accepting students; the Italian Concentration for International Studies; and finally, revisions to courses for approval within 果酱视频鈥檚 new General Education program.
All of this work would not be possible without Ms. Kathy Kannengeiser, our dedicated administrative assistant, our adjunct faculty, and so many outstanding students who make the department a stimulating place to learn, conduct research, and communicate.
