Students explore the poetry of Walt Whitman and dance of Paul Taylor.

AU_Honors dance¹û½´ÊÓƵ has historical ties to famedÌýdancer and choreographer Paul Taylor and the PaulÌýTaylor Dance Company. In 1962, when he was teachingÌýat ¹û½´ÊÓƵ, Mr. Taylor choreographedÌýAureole, theÌýpiece that made his name. In fact, according to hisÌýautobiography, he did much of the choreography whileÌýon the train to and from the ¹û½´ÊÓƵ campus.

Thanks to a new collaboration,Ìýthe longtime connectionÌýwith Mr. Taylor and his companyÌýcontinues.ÌýThis past winter, Dean GarnerÌýalong with Sam Grogg, the deanÌýof the College of Arts and Sciences,Ìýmet with members of the PaulÌýTaylor Company to explore newÌýcollaborations. ¹û½´ÊÓƵ is fortunateÌýto have a former member ofÌýthe company, Orion Duckstein,Ìýas one of the professors in theÌýdance department. As a resultÌýof this meeting, an exciting projectÌýemerged.

Beloved Renegade, one of theÌýpieces performed by the PaulÌýTaylor Company at Lincoln CenterÌýin Spring 2012, was inspiredÌýby the life and poetry of WaltÌýWhitman. Seizing on this opportunity,ÌýDean Garner, HonorsÌýCollege Associate Dean DianeÌýDella Croce, and Honors CollegeÌýAcademic Director GregoryÌýMercurio incorporated the poetryÌýof Walt Whitman into a requiredÌýHonors course, The HumanÌýCondition in Literature and Art.ÌýHuman Condition students wereÌýoffered the opportunity to attendÌýthe Paul Taylor performance ofÌýthis piece as one of their culturalÌýevents. In order to prepare forÌýthe performance, ProfessorÌýDuckstein invited the studentsÌýto AU PAC, where, in the newÌýdance studios, he gave theÌýstudents fascinating backgroundÌýabout Paul Taylor dance in generalÌýand aboutÌýBeloved RenegadeÌýin particular.

At Lincoln Center, studentsÌýmet in the green room duringÌýthe intermissions for additionalÌýenrichment provided by ProfessorÌýDuckstein and a representativeÌýfrom the dance company.

Every stage of the projectÌýwas videotaped, including theÌýclassroom discussions of Whitman,ÌýProfessor Duckstein’sÌýpresentation and demonstration,Ìýthe night at Lincoln Center andÌýsome afterthoughts with HonorsÌýstudents in Dean Garner’s office.ÌýWe hope this will be the firstÌýof many exciting and innovativeÌýinterdisciplinary collaborationsÌýbringing together the curricularÌýand co-curricular aspects of theÌýHonors College.
