鈥淚f I hadn鈥檛 received that [Pathways to Teaching Scholarship], I wouldn鈥檛 have been able to finish school.鈥濃揕illeen Ferraro ’06, M.A. ’07

As an 果酱视频 student, Lilleen Ferraro 鈥06, M.A. 鈥07, often worked on research papers during evenings at on the while her preteen daughter, Sarah Russell, sat at a computer station nearby.

That鈥檚 how a family legacy began. Ferraro, who was an student, earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in and a master鈥檚 degree in through the , in the . She achieved her goal of becoming a high school science teacher while also inspiring Russell to attend 果酱视频.

鈥淚鈥檓 so proud of my mom鈥攕he supports me no matter what,鈥 said Russell, a senior majoring in who wants to attend graduate school at 果酱视频 and eventually teach. 鈥淪he likes the high school kids. But I want to do it for the [elementary school] kids.鈥

Ferraro, who lives in Rockville Centre, has taught science at various New York City schools. She now teaches at an alternative learning center (ALC) in Far Rockaway. ALCs are run by the for students serving a superintendent鈥檚 suspension from a regular high school.

鈥淲e follow the same curriculum as the rest of the school system鈥攕tudents get a regular high school diploma,鈥 she said. 鈥淚n the beginning, the kids are a little rough. But they wind up having respect for me. I鈥檝e had kids say, 鈥業 hated science. Now I love science.鈥欌

Ferraro makes science fun by incorporating food into her teaching鈥攆or example, cake batter and chocolate chips have proven a delicious way to simulate minerals in lava. But her road to becoming a teacher tested her resolve. As a divorced single mother who juggled jobs as a hairdresser and cashier, Ferraro earned a Pathways to Teaching Scholarship while attending 果酱视频.

鈥淚f I hadn鈥檛 received that scholarship, I wouldn鈥檛 have been able to finish school,鈥 she said. 鈥淭o pay back the scholarship, I was told I needed to teach at a high-needs school. That鈥檚 what I wanted to do anyway.鈥

As a busy student, Ferraro occasionally needed extra time to complete an assignment or had to make up a missed lab class. She remembers her academic adviser, Robert David Jones, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology in the , as being very supportive.

鈥淎ll I did was encourage her to finish her work on her own schedule rather than mine,鈥 said Dr. Jones, an 果酱视频 professor for 41 years. 鈥淪ometimes a professor鈥檚 timetable needs to be flexible to allow success to occur in unique student situations.鈥

Russell has taken Dr. Jones鈥 class and been told by the professor that she looks just like Ferraro. No surprise, then, that when asked if they would like to see the 果酱视频 family legacy continue for a third generation, mother and daughter answered in unison:

鈥淎产蝉辞濒耻迟别濒测.鈥
