Students with a love of animation should be excited by two new courses听that gives them the chance to take their imaginative storytelling Professor Geoff Grogan is creator of 鈥渇andancer鈥into the听digital and academic realm. This curricula venture joins the Communications听and Art departments beginning this summer with Disney to Burton: An听Animation History that traces the evolution of the medium through the 20th听century. A second course for Fall 2013 in Digital Animation is a hands-on听workshop for creating such听animated stories.

鈥淭his fusion between the听two programs makes perfect听sense,鈥 says Prof. Paul Thaler,听chair of the Communication听Department. 鈥淲e are hoping听that this is just the start of听cohort programs that gives听students more opportunity to听explore new and innovative听courses such as animation.鈥

The Animation course听takes students through the听processes of conceptualizing听characters and story ideas听before creating their听adventures through digital听technologies. 鈥淎nimation is growing as听a wonderful narrative form,鈥 says Thaler, 鈥渁nd now students will have the听chance to unleash their imagination and talent in such story telling.鈥

Professor Geoff Grogan, a distinguished听mixed-media artist and cartoonist, and the听chair of the Art Department, will be teaching听the animation history course this summer听and in the Spring 2014 semester. 鈥(These听courses) will provide students who are听interested in animation a context for understanding both technological and听conceptual developments in the field across听its 100 year history.鈥

For听comic听enthusiasts,听Grogan鈥檚听over-size听“art-comic work,鈥 “Look Out! Monsters,鈥澨“fandancer” is included in听the collection, “Abstract Comics: The听Anthology.鈥 He has also co-published and听contributed to “pood”, a critically acclaimed听comic anthology, and currently is working on听a webcomic, “Plastic Babyheads from Outer听Space,鈥 with fantastic creatures about to听invade planet Earth. Grogan鈥檚 work has also听been picked up for syndication.

The summer animation history course听runs May 28-June 7, Mondays and Thursdays from听1:00-5:00 p.m. The digital animation course is slated听for the fall semester, Tuesdays at 10:50 a.m.-1:20 p.m.
