Nursing majors Genna Giordano, Amanda Krakoff and Meaghan Lynch were among those expressing opinions when asked about Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, while wearing scrubs, delivered a heartfelt monologue about nurses.

Controversy arose from a surprising part of ABC鈥檚 Miss America telecast last September鈥攖he talent segment, in which Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, while wearing scrubs, delivered a heartfelt monologue about nurses being under-appreciated.

The next-day mocking criticism by Joy Behar and others on ABC鈥檚 The View led to some sponsors pulling their commercials鈥攏otably Johnson & Johnson, which has been running TV campaigns supportive of the nursing profession since 2003.

Though Johnson spoke movingly about Joe, an Alzheimer鈥檚 patient who made her realize the importance of being a nurse, Behar mocked her for wearing a so-called doctor鈥檚 stethoscope and Michelle Collins sneered that she 鈥渂asically read her emails out loud.鈥

Nursing majors , and were among those expressing opinions when asked about that contestant鈥檚 performance and the aftermath.

Recalling discussions she and classmates had, Lynch said, 鈥淎lthough the opinions of the women on The View bothered us, I did not take it personally. As a student in such a rigorous program, I know the amount of work that goes into becoming a nurse.鈥

She agreed with Johnson that 鈥渘urses truly are under-appreciated simply because most people have no idea of just how much nurses are responsible for, and how often nurses go beyond those responsibilities.鈥 She added, 鈥淲hile Joy Behar may never know the weight of carrying a patient鈥檚 life in her hands, or how to use a stethoscope, she will also never know the true joy that comes with nursing.鈥

Lynch observed, 鈥淎 hospital can be a lonely place, especially for patients with no family or friends, or a patient going through a difficult disease like Miss Colorado鈥檚 patient, Joe.鈥

In Lynch鈥檚 view, 鈥淣ursing is a talent, one not easy to show others on a stage like a song or a dance.鈥

Agreeing with that, Krakoff added, 鈥淚 thought the contestant鈥檚 monologue was touching and definitely something I could connect with.鈥 She and her classmates 鈥渇elt offended for the Colorado contestant,鈥 Krakoff said, 鈥渂ecause we all know how hard it is to be a nurse.鈥

She added, 鈥淚 was disappointed at Joy Behar鈥檚 reaction in saying she was wearing a 鈥榙octor鈥檚鈥 stethoscope. Nurses play such a huge role in medical care and their comments only proved that nurses are under-appreciated.鈥

However, Giordano was less upset. 鈥淭o be honest, I didn鈥檛 think much of it,鈥 she said. 鈥淭his is a common stereotype that nurses face.鈥

In any case, she felt, 鈥淧eople generally don鈥檛 go into nursing for the glory or the recognition. You need to have the confidence in yourself as part of the medical team to know that you make some kind of a difference.鈥

The View barbs were a topic of discussion among her classmates but, Giordano said, 鈥淲e鈥檝e got bigger fish to fry than worrying about someone鈥檚 offhanded ignorance.鈥
