果酱视频 has once again received high marks from major national and international college ranking services.

The highlights:

  • U.S. News & World Report includes 果酱视频 at No. 93 on its first-ever list of Top Private National Universities. The University rose seven rankings points overall in National Universities.
  • 果酱视频 rose 14 spots on the U.S. News & World Report Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs list.
  • Forbes ranked 果酱视频 as Long Island鈥檚 premier private university for the fourth consecutive year.
  • 果酱视频 was recognized once again on the international stage with inclusion in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

U.S. News & World Report 2027 Rankings

For the ninth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report recognized 果酱视频 as one of the nation鈥檚 Best Colleges and as one of New York state鈥檚 top 20 higher education institutions.

U.S. News also cited 果酱视频 as a Best College for Veterans and a Top Performer on Social Mobility, a ranking that is particularly meaningful, as first-generation college students make up nearly half of the University鈥檚 student body.

While increases in six-year graduation rates and first-year retention rates played a role in 果酱视频鈥檚 high rankings, President Michael Balboni 鈥81, JD, notes that the University鈥檚 standing goes beyond the numbers.

“果酱视频鈥檚 strong national rankings reflect something much deeper than metrics; they reflect a culture of care we foster every day,鈥 President Balboni said. “Behind these numbers lies a close-knit community where faculty members mentor with heart, staff go above and beyond, and students support each other鈥檚 growth.”

Recognized Leadership in Healthcare Fields

U.S. News also highlighted the excellence of undergraduate and graduate programs offered by 果酱视频鈥檚 College of Nursing and Public Health, giving top rankings to its Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master’s in Nursing programs as Bests. The College鈥檚 programs in those areas ranked higher than those of all other private universities on Long Island.

The College, whose Master of Public Health and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs are also U.S. News bests, is addressing New York鈥檚 critical healthcare staffing needs by offering its Accelerated BS in Nursing program this year at 果酱视频鈥檚 new Manhattan Center. Those efforts are being bolstered by the appointment of Leonard C. Achan 鈥99 as chair of the University鈥檚 board of trustees and the election to the board of Michael Dowling, CEO emeritus of Northwell Health.

A “University in Motion”

The combined 2026鈥2027 national and global rankings鈥攚hich also include U.S. News Best Graduate Programs in business, clinical psychology, social work and speech-language pathology鈥攗nderscore 果酱视频’s commitment to high-impact clinical training, research and career readiness. They reflect the current strength of the University and its future potential.

“Our continued ascent in these prestigious national and international rankings reflects a university in motion,鈥 President Balboni said. “We are attracting significant grant funding, securing new partnerships and adding to the value of an 果酱视频 degree.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that healthcare support occupations will grow 13.3 percent between 2025 and 2035, nearly four times the 3.5 percent projected for employment overall.

To help meet that demand, the College of Professional and Continuing Studies (CPCS) is expanding its Allied Health Certificate programs on Long Island and in Manhattan, pairing scholarships and hands-on training with direct connections to employers.

Scholarships for Emerging Dental Assistants

With a $25,000 community grant from the New York Community Trust, CPCS will provide scholarships and comprehensive support to 11 students ages 18 to 29 pursuing the Dental Assistant professional certificate at the Hempstead Adult Education site. 7 percent between 2025 and 2035, also well above the 3.5 percent projected for all occupations, with about 53,000 openings a year nationwide.

The initiative is designed to help students build the skills, credentials and career connections needed to enter Long Island鈥檚 growing healthcare workforce.

Scholarship recipients, along with students in related allied health programs, will have access to certification exam preparation, academic advising and individualized student support. Participants will also take part in five professional development workshops covering career planning, r茅sum茅 development, professional communication, and AI and digital workplace skills, which are increasingly expected in modern healthcare settings.

As students near completion of their programs, CPCS will help them move from the classroom into the workforce. Externships will provide hands-on experience, while interview preparation, employer connections and job-matching services are intended to bridge the gap between learning and a first job.

鈥淭hanks to the generous support of the New York Community Trust, we鈥檙e able to open doors for young people who are ready to build a career in healthcare,鈥 said Sandra Castro, PhD, senior associate dean in the College of Professional and Continuing Studies. “The demand for professionals in these fields keeps growing throughout our communities. For many of our participants, this is the first step toward an undergraduate degree and a future with even more opportunity.鈥

New Manhattan Center Broadens the Offerings

CPCS is also expanding its allied health portfolio at its new Manhattan Center, where it is launching hybrid programs in Clinical Medical Assisting and EKG Technician and Phlebotomy Technician training. Designed with working adults and other nontraditional students in mind, the programs pair flexible online asynchronous coursework with hands-on laboratory experiences and office hours at the center’s state-of-the-art facility.

Together, the initiatives reflect CPCS鈥檚 effort to create flexible routes into healthcare careers while pairing students with the education, support and real-world experience they need to succeed.

Meredith Whitley, PhD, professor of health and sport sciences at 果酱视频鈥檚 Ruth S. Ammon College of Education and Health Sciences, believes youth sport culture has reached a breaking point. As one of the country鈥檚 leading scholars in youth sport, Dr. Whitley has spent years working to restore what she calls an 鈥渆cosystem in crisis.鈥 She鈥檚 particularly concerned about the mental health of young athletes, which often buckles under the weight of expectations from coaches and parents. Yet youth sport participation should be a protective factor for mental health鈥攏ot a risk factor. Dr. Whitley鈥檚 solution to this crisis is a road map for systemic reform.

For the past two years, Dr. Whitley and her research partner, William Massey, PhD, of Oregon State University, have been developing the United States鈥 first-ever comprehensive youth sports mental health guidelines. In the absence of federal regulations or a dedicated government ministry, these guidelines close a problematic policy gap. They鈥檙e the product of input from more than 100 athletes, families, coaches and experts, translating both scholarly research and lived experience into actionable, evidence-based guidance for youth sport leaders.

Rethinking the Youth Sports Ecosystem

In many youth sport settings in the United States, any adult can show up and volunteer to become a coach, no prior experience or training required. Dr. Whitley wants to change that. 鈥淲e need to make sure volunteers are coaching in ways that are physically safe,鈥 she said. That means, at the very minimum, conducting background checks and sport safety training.

But training coaches to support mental health is trickier. 鈥淗ow do we help coaches understand how to build psychologically safe, developmentally appropriate environments where kids can flourish? How do we help coaches cultivate a sense of inclusion and belonging?鈥

Dr. Whitley鈥檚 guidelines lay out a clear path forward鈥攏ot only for coaches, but for parents, too. As her research revealed, parents鈥 behavior can make or break their child鈥檚 experience. 鈥淭ime and again, we heard from young athletes that the worst part is the car ride home after the game.鈥

鈥溾 (Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, May 2026), a related article Dr. Whitley co-authored with Dr. Massey, recounts young athletes鈥 frustration with their parents鈥 postgame critiques. Parents becoming critics rather than caregivers, even when their feedback is well-meaning, only adds fuel to the fire. Much like coaches, Dr. Whitley believes, parents have to be trained how to 鈥渟how up.鈥

A Landmark National Initiative, Supported by $450,000 in Grant Funding

Dr. Whitley鈥檚 research has been supported by high-profile organizations across the country. A $100,000 grant from the powered phase one, with another $100,000 from Movember powering phase two鈥攁long with a $250,000 grant from the . For this most recent grant, 果酱视频 was selected as just one of 10 inaugural partners in its Empower Every Coach (EEC) program, enabling Dr. Whitley鈥檚 work to be connected with a national portfolio of other systems-level youth sport projects.

鈥淢ental Health Guidelines for Youth Sport Across the United States鈥 kicked off in early 2025 with an intensive literature review, encompassing 20,000 research papers and programming from 80-plus programs and organizations, as well as a series of national focus groups and an 果酱视频 study, which allowed her team to get feedback from 22 experts in the intersection of youth sport and mental health. Later in 2025, Dr. Whitley and her team held a two-day expert advisory panel at Nike鈥檚 headquarters in New York City to finalize the guidelines and develop a plan for dissemination.

In July 2026, the project entered a new, much-anticipated phase: implementation and testing. Dr. Whitley and her team began working with a cohort of 鈥渁nchor partners,鈥 spanning grassroots, school-based and performance sport settings from coast to coast.

The Seven Guidelines Making Real-World Impact

For the next 18 months, these anchor partners will serve as an important proving ground. As they put the mental health guidelines into practice, they鈥檒l be reshaping their sport programs from the ground up, turning potential pressure cookers into the safe havens they were always meant to be.

The first three guidelines set a developmental baseline: prioritizing young athletes鈥 physical, psychological and social growth over performance. The rest address mental health directly, covering subjects like crisis response training, clear access to mental health resources and emergency preparedness plans.

鈥淟ots of programs have emergency plans for physical injuries, but what about mental health?鈥 Dr. Whitley said. 鈥淚f there鈥檚 a collective trauma in the community, or something really hard has happened for one athlete on the team, we don鈥檛 want program leaders to be figuring out what to do on the fly.鈥 She鈥檚 also determined to enhance mental health literacy. Coaches should be able to recognize early signs of distress and, critically, gauge if their athletes are just having a bad day, 鈥渙r if it鈥檚 something more serious that needs to be escalated.鈥

A Healthier Future for Youth Sports

During the testing phase, Dr. Whitley鈥檚 team will be collecting data from their anchor partners, working in real time to refine the 鈥淢ental Health Guidelines for Youth Sport Across the United States.鈥 鈥淲e鈥檒l be learning as we go,鈥 she said. 鈥淲here are the friction points? What is and isn鈥檛 feasible? How can we make sure the guidelines are ready for a broader rollout?鈥 At the end of 2027, they鈥檒l synthesize their findings into an open-access tool kit that can be accessed by any sport program leader, anywhere.

Though the guidelines will remain a work in progress for some time, Dr. Whitley is excited about the possibility of real, systems-level change鈥攅specially as some states are finally beginning to legislate mental health training and coach requirements. 鈥淚 hope our guidelines will help shape those policies,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd eventually we鈥檒l have a clear foundation for rebuilding youth sport as a healthier, more inclusive ecosystem.鈥

The 果酱视频 NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is using Breast Cancer Awareness Month to encourage women across New York to take that step and connect with a network of survivors, volunteers and professionals who will be there along the way.

The message 鈥淭ake the First Step. You鈥檙e Not Alone鈥 is the theme of the program鈥檚 Fall 2026 breast cancer awareness campaign. It encourages women to prioritize their health by scheduling mammograms, learning about available breast cancer programs and reaching out for information and support.

That message will come to life on Thursday, October 22, when the program presents its annual Celebration of Survivorship at 果酱视频 in Garden City. Breast cancer survivors Pam Shapiro, Donna T. Bacon 鈥94, MSW 鈥99, PhD, and Jeannie Rettura will share their experiences with diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and the support they received along the way.

鈥淔or many women, the most difficult part is taking that first step and reaching out,鈥 said Reyna Machado, executive director of the 果酱视频 NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. 鈥淥nce they do, there are people here who understand what they are experiencing. Our volunteers, most of whom are breast cancer survivors themselves, and our professional staff provide information, support and connections to local resources. We want women across New York to know that support is available throughout their breast cancer journey.鈥

Since 1980, the 果酱视频 NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, a project of the 果酱视频 School of Social Work, has provided information and emotional support to people affected by breast cancer. Its toll-free hotline operates 365 days a year and connects callers with volunteers who are breast cancer survivors and understand firsthand many of the concerns surrounding a diagnosis.

The program also provides professional counseling in English and Spanish, support groups, educational forums and events, community outreach, survivorship programming and referrals for free or low-cost mammograms.

The women speaking at this year鈥檚 Celebration of Survivorship have various experiences with breast cancer and have been connected with our program supporting other women for decades.

Shapiro has faced breast cancer diagnoses in 2000, 2010 and 2019 and serves as a member of the 果酱视频 NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program Advisory Board. Dr. Bacon is a breast cancer survivor and advocate who was diagnosed in 2006. Rettura, diagnosed in 1986, is a breast cancer survivor and volunteer with the 果酱视频 NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.

The Celebration of Survivorship will be held Thursday, October 22, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom at 果酱视频鈥檚 Ruth S. Harley University Center in Garden City. Doors open at 4:00 p.m., with the program beginning at 4:30 p.m. A light supper will be served. The event is free.

Dowling, who built into New York鈥檚 largest private employer and the Northeast鈥檚 largest healthcare provider, brings his legacy of global leadership in healthcare, public policy and crisis management to the University.

Dowling鈥檚 appointment reinforces the University鈥檚 commitment to aligning its academic programming with the immediate, evolving needs of New York鈥檚 healthcare sector.

鈥淢ichael Dowling knows firsthand what the modern workforce demands,鈥 noted 果酱视频 President Michael Balboni 鈥81, JD. 鈥淥ur vision is to be Long Island鈥檚 preeminent institution for healthcare education, and Michael鈥檚 guidance will be invaluable as we graduate the next generation of frontline healthcare workers, administrators and mental health professionals.鈥

果酱视频 has been named a Best College among National Universities for eight consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report, and for the past three years. One of the largest nursing schools in New York state, the 果酱视频 College of Nursing and Public Health (CNPH) has steadily risen the national rankings in recent years for both its undergraduate and graduate programs. 果酱视频鈥檚 CNPH is also the home of its Clinical Education and Simulation Lab (CESiL), the only lab of its kind on Long Island to be accredited by the .

果酱视频鈥檚 Powerhouse Governance Team

Dowling joins 果酱视频鈥檚 highly experienced and respected board of trustees, known for its diverse expertise, deep tenure and civic reputation鈥攁dding his global heavyweight status to an already formidable governance team. He joins Leonard C. Achan 鈥99, a fellow healthcare and business leader and CEO of LiveOnNY, who was recently named chair of 果酱视频鈥檚 board.

President Balboni鈥檚 background in policy and homeland security, paired with the healthcare dominance of Dowling and Achan, positions 果酱视频鈥檚 board as a coalition of New York鈥檚 most experienced, crisis-tested leaders.

鈥淚鈥檓 extraordinarily proud to join the 果酱视频 board,鈥 said Dowling. 鈥淭he University has a long, proud history of providing students with rewarding career opportunities in healthcare and so many other professions throughout Long Island and the entire metropolitan area. As the longtime CEO at Northwell, where we developed mutually beneficial clinical and educational alliances with 果酱视频, I鈥檓 well aware of the many talented nurses, public health professionals, administrators, mental health counselors and other graduates who helped fill vital roles within our health system. I look forward to lending my insight and expertise to the University and working with Mike Balboni and my fellow board members to strengthen 果酱视频鈥檚 standing as a preeminent institution for healthcare education.鈥

Dowling鈥檚 appointment follows the recent addition of four new trustees with diverse insights in law, business, real estate, infrastructure and higher education, and underscores 果酱视频鈥檚 commitment to utilizing enterprise-level, external leadership to thrive and address the complex challenges of higher education.

Social Impact and Shared Values

Unlike other corporate executives who join university boards, Dowling has a Master of Social Work and began his career as a professor of social policy. While his background mirrors 果酱视频鈥檚 dedication to community impact, he is also widely recognized for taking a stand on some of the nation鈥檚 toughest societal issues鈥攆rom gun violence prevention and the youth mental health crisis to caring for an aging population.

In addition to his healthcare leadership, Dowling brings higher education and corporate governance experience to 果酱视频. He served on the board of trustees of Fordham University for eight years and held board appointments with BankUnited, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the Foreign Policy Association and the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School at University College Dublin.

The day opened with welcoming remarks from Xiao-lei Wang, PhD, dean of the Ruth S. Ammon College of Education and Health Sciences, and Christopher Storm, PhD, provost and senior executive vice president of academic affairs, who emphasized the relevance of the conversation for the 果酱视频 community and beyond. The forum was organized and moderated by both Hariklia Proios, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Craig Anderson, PhD, professor of neurology and epidemiology at UNSW Sydney, director of the brain health program at and president-elect of the .

Defining What 鈥淎ging Well鈥 Means

Invited participants were asked to think beyond longevity as simply the number of years a person lives or the physical strength of one鈥檚 body. The conversation focused on the quality of those years and whether people can remain healthy, independent, connected and supported as they age. The morning began with a brief audience reflection, where participants were asked to write one word that captured what 鈥渁ging well鈥 meant to them. Some of the participant responses included 鈥渋ndependence,鈥 鈥渉ealth,鈥 鈥渇amily,鈥 鈥渟upport,鈥 鈥渆nergy,鈥 鈥渉appiness,鈥 鈥渜uality鈥 and 鈥渇ulfillment.鈥 The activity offered an early reminder that aging well means different things to different people, while also revealing common themes around health, connection and quality of life.

Keynote: Brain Health and the Whole Life Course

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Anderson, who spoke from his experience as an internationally recognized leader in stroke and brain health. His presentation focused on brain health, longevity and the importance of protecting brain health across the whole life course.

After the keynote session, the forum moved from evidence to implementation through an expert dialogue moderated by Chris Macey, director of advocacy and patient support at the . The panel brought together Socrates Kakoulides, MD, cardiologist and chief imaging officer at in Miami, Florida; Nicola Anderson, business leader at ; Jan van der Merwe, global project lead of the and co-founder of; and Alan Cooper, PhD 鈥95, clinical associate professor of management at 果酱视频. Together, the speakers examined why, even when much is already known about prevention and brain health, large-scale implementation remains difficult. Their discussion highlighted that successful aging should not be addressed by medicine alone, but depends on how clinicians, institutions, policymakers, business leaders, communities and individuals work together.

A central part of the day was the Sense-Making Workshop, led by Dr. Proios and doctoral candidate Myrto Pyrrou. The workshop discussions pointed to several practical concerns that participants felt were shaping the experience of aging. In the health systems group, participants emphasized the need for better care pathways, continuity of care and more integrated services, especially in a healthcare system that can often feel disconnected. The prevention group raised issues such as access to healthy food, sedentary lifestyles and the need to make prevention more realistic in everyday life. The business and policy group focused on incentives, socioeconomic gaps, community knowledge and the challenge of building a stronger culture of prevention across sectors.

Leadership Workshop: Creating the Biggest Possibility

In the afternoon, the forum shifted from diagnosis to possibility through a leadership workshop titled 鈥淐reating the Biggest Possibility.鈥 Participants were invited to think about the future they want to create, the leadership required to make it real and the milestones that could move this vision forward. Reflections from the session touched on stronger community ties, more accessible health and wellness services, reduced loneliness and a greater recognition of older adults鈥 knowledge and contribution.

Feedback collected from participants was all positive and attendees expressed appreciation for both the content of the day and the opportunity to take part in meaningful, cross-sector dialogue. Special thanks were extended to 果酱视频 staff members Stacey Barbato, director of operations; Barbara Clemens, administrative assistant; Kerry Scalere, administrative assistant; and Jessica Mannhaupt, coordinator of communications and outreach, as well as to the panelists, all participants and volunteers Liz Bethlio and Taylor Slicklein.

Looking Ahead

Successful aging is not only a health issue, but also a leadership challenge. Supporting longer, healthier and more connected lives will require collaboration across disciplines, institutions and generations. Each participant left with a certificate of completion for promoting brain health and longevity.

You鈥檒l find influencers demonstrating how to make 鈥減rotein coffee,鈥 dunking themselves in a tub of ice water for faster post-workout recovery and sharing their journey with GLP-1s. Are cold plunges worthwhile? How much protein do you actually need?

With the sheer volume of information here, how can you know what鈥檚 true and what鈥檚 hype?

That鈥檚 where the experts come in. At 果酱视频, our nutrition and exercise science faculty have dedicated years to their respective fields and have plenty of experience in separating evidence from fads. Even better: They鈥檙e training the next generation of professionals to do the same. The students in our bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degree nutrition and exercise science programs go on to become successful personal trainers, wellness directors, rehabilitation specialists, physicians, public health professionals and more. In these roles, they help others make informed decisions鈥攚ithout turning to TikTok.

So, what is true, and what鈥檚 hype? Here, our faculty give their take on the questions they get asked the most about fitness and nutrition.

Protein: How much is too much?

People think that if they consume high amounts of protein, it鈥檚 going to equate to bigger biceps, but it鈥檚 the same as fats and carbohydrates鈥攊f you consume excess amounts of calories from protein, it鈥檚 going to get stored as fat. Most adults would benefit from having closer to 1 to 1.5 grams (g) per kilogram (kg) of body weight per day. When you start pushing past the 2.5 g per kg mark, you can run into issues such as kidney strain, increased risk of kidney stones, constipation and simply displacing room in your stomach for other nutrients, like heart-healthy fats and fiber.

Is cold plunging doing anything for you?

The short answer is: No. I haven鈥檛 seen anything convincing on the benefits of cold plunges. It鈥檚 a very overhyped modality.

John Petrizzo, PT, DPT, CSCS professor of exercise science

There are people purporting various changes in hormones from cold plunging, but there鈥檚 too much variability to really know if the changes are directly from that. Honestly, it鈥檚 more of a perceived feeling. Some people enjoy being in the cold plunge and feel better after. And my advice to people who enjoy doing it is to go for it. But you鈥檙e not going to recover any faster utilizing a cold plunge.

How helpful is wearable technology and AI coaching for meeting fitness goals?

Wearable technology is a pretty good way to monitor and track progress within an exercise program. With AI coaching, I inform people to err on the side of caution. I鈥檓 sure that with time that technology will continue to improve and could be utilized in a more sophisticated way.

Mike Aquino 鈥11, MS 鈥12, PT, DPT, OCS associate professor of exercise science and director of health sciences

Wearable technology has really grown and become more reliable, especially with tracking heart rate during cardiovascular exercise. A lot of professional sports teams are even using these wearable technologies to help determine when their players need more recovery time, so it鈥檚 a good tool and there are some products out there that are more accessible now than they were a few years back. As far as AI coaching goes, it鈥檚 just a little early to give it a strong recommendation at this point.

John Petrizzo, PT, DPT, CSCS professor of exercise science

Is intermittent fasting healthy, or just hype?

There are human trials where there have been reductions in fat mass and improvements in blood sugar levels from intermittent fasting, but when compared to general healthful eating or calorie restriction, there hasn’t been much of a difference. I do know there are a lot of populations where intermittent fasting wouldn鈥檛 be helpful: people who have diabetes where their blood sugar is poorly regulated; very elderly populations, because of the increased risk of nutrient deficiencies, muscle loss, and bone loss; the pregnant population, because you don鈥檛 want to restrict yourself in a time of higher nutrient needs; and athletes, because you don鈥檛 want to impair your training by underfueling.

Lauren Ciuffo adjunct professor of nutrition

Do I need to exercise differently on GLP-1s?

Anyone in a severe caloric restriction who鈥檚 losing weight is not just going to lose fat mass, but also lean body mass. So, it鈥檚 important for people who are on GLP-1s to resistance-train to minimize that loss of lean body mass.

John Petrizzo, PT, DPT, CSCS professor of exercise science

Aside from preserving lean mass, which is critical, you also want to try to maintain metabolic rate鈥攖hat doesn鈥檛 happen with just taking GLP-1s. The other piece is the importance of exercise in maintaining good cardiovascular health, so it鈥檚 imperative that aerobic exercise is incorporated as an adjunct to GLP-1 medication.

Are sports drinks healthy for you?

There鈥檚 a time and a place for sports drinks. If you鈥檙e exercising at high intensity, especially once you pass that 60-minute mark, sports drinks are actually recommended because they鈥檙e going to provide the right ratio of carbohydrates to sustain your glucose levels. It鈥檚 also going to contain electrolytes that you lose through sweat, things like sodium and potassium, that鈥檚 going to prevent cramping and help with muscular coordination. But if you鈥檙e drinking sports drinks consistently while you鈥檙e not engaging in exercise, it鈥檚 going to add calories quickly, and it can lead to unwanted weight gain and high blood sugar..
